Sustainability often begins below the surface, in our cities’ pipe systems. This principle also applies to the production of PVC sewage pipes. At K 2025 in Düsseldorf, Germany (October 8–15), KraussMaffei Extrusion will showcase its newly developed 3-layer pipe head, designed to process up to 100% recycled material safely and reliably. With this innovation, the company underscores its commitment to resource conservation in pipe manufacturing while meeting the growing requirements of the circular economy. And for those making the journey from Australia or New Zealand, you won’t be alone; Headland Technology will be on the ground with representatives ready to meet and connect with ANZ local manufacturers.
Two years of development for a new benchmark
The KM-3L RK 42-HP is not an upgrade of an existing design but a completely new development, engineered and simulated from the ground up. With a throughput range of 400 to 1,200 kg/h and diameters from 110 to 250 mm, it is tailored for large-scale industrial applications.
Ralf Benack, CEO KraussMaffei Extrusion, says:
“With the new KM-3L RK 42-HP, we are presenting the most advanced 3-layer pipe head for PVC applications. Our customers benefit from economical, sustainable, and outstanding quality pipe production.”
Intelligent design for maximum performance
At the core of the pipe head is a high-precision, patent-pending flow system with symmetrical material feed across all three layers. The innovative solution for the core layer uses a highly efficient 1-to-8 distribution, delivering short dwell times and reducing error susceptibility. This enables 100% recycled material to be processed reliably, whether the layer is foamed or compact, and regardless of whether in-house recycled or post-consumer material is used.
The two cover layers also provide efficiency and flexibility. While virgin material is commonly used, the design can also handle 100% recycled material.
Stable processes, significant savings
The KM-3L RK 42-HP allows manufacturers to operate more economically.
Dr. Thomas Unger, Vice President Technologies at KraussMaffei Extrusion, says:
“Thanks to the largest process window on the market, long production runs with minimal downtime are achievable. At the same time, material costs are significantly reduced.”
As material costs typically account for the majority of production expenses, even small reductions can have a significant impact on profitability.
No streaks thanks to advanced flow system
Spiderlines, fine marks on the inner pipe wall, are virtually eliminated through the new flow system. The optimised material flow prevents build-up and turbulence, ensuring smooth surfaces without streaks.
Environmentally friendly and practical
The design eliminates chrome plating and double compression entirely. This not only reduces production costs but also improves sustainability. Removing double compression geometry reduces thermal stress on material, simplifies cleaning, and enables faster tool changes.
The KM-3L RK 42-HP also delivers ease of use: cleaning and product changes are straightforward, reducing downtime and ensuring reliable operation.
