Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies (FDB) is a globally recognised contract manufacturer of biopharmaceuticals, with facilities across the USA, UK, and Denmark. As part of the Japanese technology group FUJIFILM since 2011, FDB specialises in developing innovative biological preparations, novel therapies, and vaccines in collaboration with biopharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. In 2019, FDB expanded its operations by acquiring the former Biogen site in Hillerød, Denmark. FDB turned to Hanel for innovative storage solutions to support its growing production needs.

About Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies: Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies partners strategically with biopharmaceutical and biotech companies to advance the development and manufacturing of cutting-edge biologics, advanced therapies, and vaccines. With state-of-the-art production facilities in the US and Europe, they provide their clients with comprehensive support to develop and commercialise treatments efficiently and effectively, ultimately improving patients’ lives.

Upon completion of current expansions in 2026, their Hillerød facility will become the largest end-to-end cell culture contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) in Europe, situated 37 km from Copenhagen in the scenic countryside. More about FDB

Challenge

FDB’s rapid growth necessitated the construction of a new building at their Hillerød site to accommodate an additional production line. This expansion posed significant storage and space management challenges, particularly for the maintenance department responsible for tools and spare parts used in medicine production. The primary objectives were to optimise the layout and maximise space utilisation by leveraging the height of the new hall.

Solution

To tackle these obstacles, a Danish Hanel equipment provider like Headland recommended the installation of Hanel Rotomat storage elevators. This suggestion came after their successful implementation of four Hanel Rotomat systems at the Hillerød site two years earlier, which had effectively improved small parts storage for the maintenance department.

Drawing on its positive track record with the Rotomat systems and strong industry reputation. The solution involved installing three Lean-Lift 3260-825 systems, each standing 5,939 mm tall. Drawing on its positive track record with the Rotomat systems and strong industry reputation. These advanced storage lifts are designed to efficiently store tools and spare parts, ensuring easy access and optimal space utilisation.

Implementation

The implementation process began with a thorough assessment of FDB’s storage needs and space constraints. The Danish Hanel provider team worked closely with FDB to design a tailored storage solution that maximised vertical space. The Hanel Lean-Lift systems were selected for their robust performance and user-friendly interface, featuring the MP 14 N-H TFT controller for manual container selection.

Installation was completed seamlessly, integrating the new storage lifts into FDB’s existing infrastructure without disrupting ongoing operations. The Lean-Lift systems now provide organised, space-saving storage, significantly enhancing the efficiency of the maintenance department.

Conclusion

Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies’ partnership with the European Hanel provider has proven instrumental in optimising storage and space utilisation at their Hillerød site. The successful deployment of Hanel Rotomat and Lean-Lift systems highlights the effectiveness of advanced intralogistics solutions in supporting the biopharmaceutical industry’s growth and operational efficiency.
