RMIT’s TRUMPF TruLaser Cell 7020
RMIT install a TRUMPF TruLaser Cell 7020 in the name of Advanced Manufacturing Research
Within the RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct, Professor Milan Brandt talks to Headland about the purchase of their new TRUMPF TruLaser Cell and the potential impact this will have on Australian Manufacturing.
“Manufacturing industries in Victoria and nationally face a number of significant challenges and to stay competitive the industry must focus upon advanced manufacturing technologies and processes. RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct aims to assist the manufacturing industry compete in global manufacturing markets.
“We bought the machine to complement our Metal Additive and laser welding research. These are growing areas of research internationally with significant commercial potential, so we purchased and installed the TRUMPF TruLaser Cell to help promote these processes locally and work with progressive companies on developing new products and processes based on laser technology.
“With Ford withdrawing their Australian operation by 2016, now is a key time to invest in various new ways of manufacturing, and welding in particular to ensure more efficiencies are gained and processes are automated as much as possible.
“RMIT are investing heavily in exploring different ways of manufacturing in Australia, within both polymer and the laser metal deposition field.
“TRUMPF is renowned as being the world leading supplier of industrial laser manufacturing equipment so naturally I was inclined to look toward TRUMPF to fill not only our research gap but also training of our TAFE and Higher Education engineering students”, says Milan.
“The TruLaser Cell 7020 that we purchased can be configured for laser cutting, laser welding and laser additive manufacture with both powder and wire feedstock so it is a very versatile machine allowing companies to explore the full potential of laser technology”, adds Milan.
